For the 2nd straight year, Coffee Distributing Corp. was a proud local sponsor of New York City’s Avon Walk For Breast Cancer. CDC provided free coffee, tea, and cocoa for the pre-dawn opening ceremony on Saturday, October 19th, and 44 CDC volunteers gave up their sleep time to brew coffee and serve it to the appreciative walkers.

The Avon Walk consists of 39 miles over two days, so the walkers had to get an early start. After a long work week, CDC’s “brew crew” gathered at midnight Saturday morning to brew 160 gallons of Estate Select Central Park Full City Roast coffee, while a “serving crew” met at 4:30AM on Manhattan’s Pier 84 to set up our serving area. Between 5AM and 7AM, we served an estimated 2,000 cups of coffee, plus an estimated 500 cups of hot cocoa and tea. By 7:15AM, the caffeinated walkers were on Mile 1 of their journey.

Each walker raised at least $1,800, and in total the weekend raised $6.7 million. Most of that money will be put to use right here in New York, as outlined by this list of grant recipients.

We are especially proud that one of our own participated in the walk this year, in addition to playing an instrumental role in coordinating our serving efforts. Equally impressively, she showed up for work on Monday, sore feet and all. Congratulations, JoAnna!
