The founder of Peet’s Coffee, Alfred Peet, was first exposed to the world of coffee in the 1930s while caring for roasting and grinding machinery at B. Koorn & Company- his father’s coffee and tea business in Alkmaar, Holland. After much traveling and experimenting, Alfred decided to sail to the United States and made a shocking discovery. He discovered that the United States, the richest country in the world, drinks the lousiest coffee. On April 1, 1966, Alfred Peet first opened the doors of his coffee store in Berkeley, CA, and quietly ignited a revolution that forever changed the expectations of American coffee drinkers.
Throughout the years, Alfred met many people who helped contribute to popular lines still in production today- for example, the Major Dickason’s Blend. Alfred became an American coffee icon and inspiration. In fact, one day in 1971 three young entrepreneurs approached Mr. Peet to learn the critical roasting and blending aspects of the coffee business. He provided them with training as well as the roasted coffee beans for their new venture, Starbucks.
Peet’s Coffee has added Stumptown and Intelligentsia, both founded by former Peet’s employees, to their portfolio, which has only added to their craft credentials. Additionally, Peet’s bought Mighty Leaf Tea, a premium tea manufacturer.
